This was an increase of 1,462 persons or 11 percent compared to the same period in the previous year.
The survey conducted last year September, and released in December, says of the 13,890 permit holders recorded as active at the end of the month, 9,295 or 66.9 percent were employed while 4,595 representing 33.1 percent were self-employed. The majority of work permit holders, 10,760 at 77.5 percent, were males.
The survey indicates that Zimbabweans recorded the highest number of employee work permit holders, 5,470 or 58.8 percent, followed by Chinese with 898 persons or 9.7 percent. The smallest number was Ghanaians with 61 persons at 0.7 percent.
However, the Chinese dominated the category of self-employed work permit holders, with 937 persons or 20.4 percent followed by the India Sub-Continent with 863 persons at 18.8 percent.Â
Most of the Zimbabweans, 2,499, were engaged in agriculture, mainly as herd boys. The rest were in construction (1,518), while real estate and manufacturing recorded 1,279 and 1,180 respectively.
Wholesale & retail trade was the dominant activity for self-employed work permit holders with 1,283 persons followed by real estate with 1,155 persons, the least being mining and quarrying with five persons.
The survey also indicates that majority of the migrant workers were doing elementary jobs with 2,384 persons or 27.0 percent. The second highest occupation group was technicians with 1,466 persons at 16.6 percent while professionals and craft workers recorded 1,434 or 16.3 percent and 1,359 persons respectively.
The survey results also show that that 8,820 or 94.9 percent of work permits valid on the reference date were newly issued work permits while the remainder were previously issued work permits or renewals.
