Kufuor, Chissano end Malawi mission

Former Ghanaian president John Kufuor and his Mozambican counterpart Joachim Chissano have completed their five-day tour of duty in Malawi after a final round of meeting with MCP and Aford presidential hopefuls.

The two African statesmen were in Malawi on an African Union (AU) fact-finding mission ahead of the 19 May general elections.

They arrived in the country Friday and held a meeting with President
Bingu wa Mutharika in the capital, Lilongwe and have also had a meeting
with former president Bakili Muluzi.

Mutharika who turned 75 on Tuesday is presidential candidate of his DPP
while Muluzi 68 will contest on his UDF party in the polls.

Completing their assignment, Kufuor and Chissano on Tuesday met with
main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) leader John Tembo, 77, in
Lilongwe and Alliance for Democracy (Aford) torch bearer Dindi Gowa
Nyasulu.

While authorities have placed a tight cover on what transpired at the
meeting, close sources say the meetings tackled on a wide range of
issues pertaining to the forthcoming elections.

Chissano who briefly told journalists that they came for pre-election assessment said they would report their findings to AU.

Muluzi however flew from his Blantyre base to give the two former Heads of State a warm send-off in Lilongwe.

State House Director General, Bruce Munthali told journalists Kufour
and Chissano are prominent African Union (AU) figures and were in the
country to discuss pertinent issues with Mutharika and other players on
matters affecting Malawi as well as the AU.

Kuofor, who has just retired after two terms in office, was taking his
first serious AU mission while Chisano has been involved in several
affairs on the continent since his retirement five some years ago.
