MALAWI: Escom staff asked to go for VCT

Northern Region Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) manager Ngwire Mwenefumbo has called on all Escom staff members to go for Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) as one way of combating HIV and Aids.

Mwenefumbo made the call in Mzuzu on Wednesday at the beginning of the
three-day peer education training workshop his organisation has
organised for employees from all the districts in the region.

Escom plays a very important role in the economic development of the
nation. We need a healthy workforce to achieve maximum production. HIV
and Aids information, therefore, is significant to our employees if we
are to effectively combat the pandemic, he said.

Trainer of trainers Charity Harawa said people should not be afraid to go for VCT.

In-fact, only those who have been tested can benefit from the various
HIV and Aids services offered by government and other institutions.

Sometimes people think we discuss their status in forums, which is not
correct because we are guided by code of ethics which emphasise
confidentiality of the results, she said.

Escom formulated the HIV and Aids policy in 2001 after realising the
need for the organisation's intervention in the fight against the
pandemic. The policy was revised in 2006.

The training, second of its kind in the region, is aimed at involving
everyone to fight stigma, encouraging people to go for VCT and
behaviour change.
