Malawi's frequent power supply cuts worsen

Peterson Zembani, the Chief Executive Officer of the troubled Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM), the country's solo utility supplier, on Monday said that the damage of the boom at Liwonde Barrage and Nkula A Hydroelectric Power screens, has led to frequent blackouts the country has been experiencing in the past two months.

Malawi has been experiencing frequent power interruptions, unplanned blackouts and load shedding since last year.

Speaking when briefing journalists on the situation of electricity
supply in the country in Lilongwe, he said that the damages have forced
his company to take emergency measures by shutting down the power
station at Nkula A Power Station on the Shire River, the country's
biggest, thereby lessening the power supply in the country.

"This closure has been done to prevent further damage to the power
station and permit emergency repairs of the screens,\" he said.

Currently, he added, the company has started maintenance work and this is expected to be concluded in due course

He added that the floating boom at Liwonde Barrage was being replaced
with a new one and was expected to be in operational end of this week.

However, he said, Malawi was using 241.85 megawatts of electricity instead of the suppressed peak demand of over 260 MW.
