MALAWI:Pac warns religious, traditional leaders

Public Affairs Committee (PAC) has warned traditional and religious leaders in the country against being used by political parties to drum up support for the May 19 General Elections, claiming that the conduct was a recipe for violence.

In a statement, PAC’s chairman, Fr. Boniface Tamani has noted that of late it has become ‘fashionable’ for traditional and religious leaders to be paraded on Television Malawi and Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) to ‘praise’ political leaders, a development, the cleric, has described as a ‘worrisome trend.’

Tamani said this conduct has created a sense of confusion in the country among various groups of people."Both traditional and religious leaders serve people of diverse political persuasions. So if they are publicly showing their sides, what message are they portraying to the people they serve. We feel that with elections very close, our leaders should refrain from this misconduct for the sake of peace and unity", said Tamani.

The Catholic fearless cleric said both religious and traditional leaders were among stakeholders to ensure that the forthcoming elections were free from violence.

"They should therefore be the first one to practice this. They should not lead the way towards the destruction of our country. They might have someone they support. But it pays to keep that within themselves. They should not preach messages which favour one side and anger the other," said Tamani. The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has been using a group of chiefs and religious leaders to speak ill of opposition leaders through TVM and MBC.

At the end of the DPP convention, it was established that DPP entered into an agreement with tradition leaders, in which the latter will campaign for the former in return for favours, which include personal houses and an increase in their honoraria.
