JOHANNESBURG - In an interview with SABC on Sunday, South African President Kgalema Motlanthe said that Zimbabwe could combat its crippling inflation by adopting the Rand as its currency.

Motlanthe did not give details of how this would work in practice but
said that help was needed for the coalition government to succeed, and
that it might be practical' to set up an arrangement with the reserve
bank in South Africa.

It is estimated that the current rate of inflation in Zimbabwe is
several billion per cent and, despite repeated devaluation of the
dollar, inflation continues to soar and local citizens suffer the
greatest repercussions.

Motlanthe urged the international community to assist Zimbabwe's new
government of national unity, after the African Union called for the
sanctions on Robert Mugabe and his cronies to be lifted.
