The police chief is also reported to have defied presidential orders to use oppressive tactics against opposition parties.
Kubambe refused to comment when contacted.Government insiders said he
will be redeployed to other services if he honourably resigns.
Kumbabwe, 41 holds a Masters Degree in Strategic Management from
Maastricht School of Management and Bachelor of Arts degree in
Humanities from Chancellor College, University of Malawi was appointed
by President Mutharika in 2006 and was unanimously confirmed by both
opposition and government sides of Parliament.
Leader of the Opposition John Tembo is on record to have told the
National Assembly when he approved his name that Kumbambe had a sound
CV.
This is the only time that we have had a policeman with a Masters
degree from Europe and a Bachelors degree from the University of
Malawi, Tembo said.
Leader of United Democratic Front (UDF) in the House George Mtafu
advised the Kumbambe not to be misused by hideous forces of darkness
but rise above politics and operate independently.
Kumbabwe has been in Malawi Police service since 1990.
