Poll: Kenyans want corrupt' ministers out

Majority Kenyans want ministers suspected to be involved in corrupt deals to resign.
Of the 1,012 respondents interviewed by the Steadman Group, 71 per cent want them out of office, pending investigation

Majority respondents want Agriculture Minister William Ruto and his Energy colleague Kiraitu Murungi to resign.

"Fifty-six per cent of the respondents think Mr Ruto should step down,
while 21 per cent say Kiraitu should resign. Those who feel Trade
Minister Amos Kimunya should resign are seven per cent, Internal
Security Minister George Saitoti, five per cent, Prime Minister Raila
Odinga, three per cent and Justice Minister Martha Karua two per cent,"
the poll indicates.

Steadman's Tom Wolf said: "Surprisingly, 51 per cent of respondents,
who feel close to ODM and its affiliates think Ruto should step aside
while 63 per cent of those who associate with PNU and its affiliates
think the Agriculture minister should resign".

Censure motion

The release of the poll comes hot on the heels of a censure Motion in
Parliament against Ruto. Ikolomani MP Bonny Khalwale filed the Motion
citing the maize scandal. The Motion was, however, defeated.

In the findings released yesterday, Kanu supporters are most concerned
about the ministers' resignation, posting 78 per cent, while supporters
of PNU are second at 76 per cent.

ODM and people not affiliated to any political party are the least
concerned, with both registering 71 per cent of respondents interviewed.

Ruto leads the pack in preference for resignation, with 56 per cent supporting this view.

The minister has been on the spot over claims that the National Cereals
and Produce Board sold maize to brokers and briefcase middlemen as
Kenyans starved.

Unscrupulous millers allegedly acquired maize from NCPB and exported it to Southern Sudan.

Interestingly, Kiraitu, whose ministry parastatal Kenya Pipeline
Company, was allegedly involved in a Sh7.6 billion oil scandal, comes
after Ruto in preference for resignation with only 21 per cent
preferring he quits.

The Kenya Pipeline Company and the Ministry of Energy have been hard
pressed over a scandal in which 126.4 million litres of oil held in
trust were irregularly released to the troubled Triton Oil Company
owned by Yagnesh Mr Devani.

On political parties, 63 per cent of PNU supporters want Ruto to leave
office compared to ODM's 51 per cent and Kanu's 61 per cent, while 21
per cent in ODM want Kiraitu to resign compared to PNU's 19 per cent
and Kanu's 28 per cent.

One in every two Kenyans doubts the Grand Coalition Government's commitment to fighting corruption.
