Ildefonso Muananthata expressed these threats in Mgo, one of the
districts of that province, apparently angry with the content of some
stories that Carlos wrote recently, exposing problems in the management
of the public affairs and the low performance of that province's in
service provision. Among stories covered that apparently angered
Muananthat is the sub-standard work on the electrification of a
district in the province and the fact that two years after floods in
the province of Tete, victims are still homeless and living in the
streets. Contacted by MISA-Mozambique, the Editor-in-Chief of
Notcias, Rogrio Sitoe, confirmed the threats and stated that he was
in touch with the Governor to better understand his concerns. The
Editor in Chief said he will meet the Governor this week to resolve the
matter.
Governor Muananthat made threats against Carlos first on 16 March in
the district of Mgo, while addressing a meeting attended by
journalists from Mozambique Public Television (TVM), Radio Mozambique
(RM) and from the daily Dirio de Moambique. The administrator of
that district, Antnio Mapure, was also present. In a direct address to
Carlos, the Governor said, the truth has got its price. ..Do you know
what happened with journalist Carlos Cardoso? Do not be surprised if
one of these days you wake up without the arm you are using to deride
me.
The following day, 17 March, the Governor made the second threat, while
addressing a group of journalists who were covering his visit to the
district. He verbally attacked Carlos saying what he wrote was
tarnishing him.
MISA-Mozambique condemns the threats by the Provincial Governor on
Carlos. These threats are a direct violation of the fundamental rights
of the media as stipulated in the Country's Constitution.
MISA-Mozambique will be monitoring the situation closely.
