ZAMBIA: Regina Chiluba appeals sentence asks for bail

FORMER President, Frederick Chiluba's wife, Regina, has filed a notice of appeal in the Lusaka High Court against a Lusaka Magistrates Court judgment in which she was convicted and sentenced to three-and-a-half years simple imprisonment.


Chiluba's lawyer, Robert Simeza filed the notice of appeal in the Lusaka High Court on Tuesday.

Mr Simeza has also applied for Chiluba's bail pending the appeal in the Lusaka High Court.

Chief Resident Magistrate, Charles Kafunda has set March 6, 2009 as the date on which to hear Chiluba's bail application.

Mr Kafunda sentenced Chiluba to three-and-a-half years simple
imprisonment after convicting her on six counts of receiving and being
in possession of stolen State property.

Mr Kafunda sentenced Chiluba to two-and-a-half years imprisonment on counts one, two, three and six.

He said Chiluba had committed a felony on count five and sentenced her to three-and-a-half years.

The sentences will run concurrently, meaning that Chiluba will serve a prison sentence of three-and-a-half years.
