In its news bulletin MIJ FM reported that Muluzi has instructed his
team of lawyers to withdraw the case which is expected to start on
Tuesday 7th April at the High Court in Blantyre.
According to sources close to Muluzi, the former leader has not
withdrawn the case and that the case will to take place next week where
his lawyers have prepared plausible grounds challenging MEC decision.
According to the media release by the United Democratic Front (UDF)
party read on Joy Radio, Muluzi has not withdrawn the case and the it
will still go on Tuesday as earlier indicated by the courts read part
of the media statement.
MIJ FM was rated by the MEC’s media monitoring result from September that it reports more positive stories about the ruling DPP.
The radio reported the story a day after DPP’s Presidential candidate
Bingu wa Mutharika had applauded the decision by MEC of barring Muluzi
from contesting. Mutharika is the only Presidential aspirant among the
other seven who have applauded the decision openly.
He is also on record to have said Muluzi will not be allowed to stand way before MEC announced the verdict about Muluzi.
The former president reacted to MEC decision by saying that he believed there was political manipulation in the rejection.
Muluzi is expected to face both MEC and Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) on the same day at the High court in Blantyre.
He is to enter plea in the K1.7 billion case in which he solicited from donors for the campaign of his UDF party in 2004.
Despite being barred, Muluzi is still holding political campaign rallies.
He is expected to tour some parts of Blantyre this Sunday while his
running mate Clement Stambuli will hold a rally at Masintha ground on
Sunday.
