president_bingu_wa_mutharika.jpgBingu wa Mutharika President Bingu wa Mutharika has been challenged to explain on claims that he pocketed US$ 40 million which he received from Taiwan government in 2005.

The challenge was made by opposition UDF vice presidential nominee, Clement Stambuli during a mass political rally held at Masintha ground in the capital, Lilongwe on Saturday.

Stambuli said if the fight against corruption had no political undertones; the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) could have pounced on Mutharika on the US$40 million donor money which he did not use for government purposes.

The money meant for government has not been accounted for and there is need for government to clarify where the aid is, said Stambuli.

The government is struggling to finish the new parliament building and yet the President had addressed the nation in 2005 when he was coming from Taiwan that he had brought a 40 million United States dollar which was meant to speed up the building, where did the money go? said Stambuli.

Malawi severed diplomatic ties with Taiwan and moved to Beijing on December 28, 2007 after the Mainland China had lured the nation with several billion dollars in aid as an incentive for securing ties.

Former president Bakili Muluzi is also facing charges which he is asked to explain on the money he received from Taiwan deposited in his personal account when he was Head of State.

The former parliamentary spokesman of UDF also told the crowd that over MK340million that was meant for the 2008/09 budget has not been used for its intended purposes.

He accused Muthalika and his DPP government for being extravagant and opulent with tax payers' money purchasing expensive vehicles yet drugs are not availabe in hospitals.

Stambuli expressed concern that the money is being misused when price of commodities is going up each and every day and that this is happening at the expense of poor people's tax.

He has however asked President Mutharika to be accountable to the nation as to where he is taking the money which his DPP party has managed to buy over 200 vehicles, 6 thousand bicycles and over 1 million t- shirts as part of camping materials.

Stambuli said the big brother has been watching all bootleg deals, gratification and wrongful-self enrichment which have been taking place in the five -year rule of Mutharika.

The UDF presidential running mate said Malawians should vote in large number during May 19 elections and expressed hope that Mutharika and DPP will be ousted through the ballot.

Stambuli said UDF has strategized very well on how it will remove Mutharika from power next month and implement development agenda for the country.

He then introduced former deputy minister Iqbar Omar as UDF parliamentary candidate for Lilongwe city west.
