Mozambique opposition fears one-sided 2009 poll

maria_ivone_soares.jpgMaria Ivone Soares MAPUTO - Mozambique 's major opposition party, Renamo, said on Wednesday the electoral law will favour the ruling Frelimo party in elections later this year but added it was too early to boycott the poll.

Renamo spokeswoman Maria Ivone Soares told journalists the electoral
law did "not satisfy all forces involved in the electoral process" and
claimed, among several concerns, the electoral commission was manned by
members of the Frelimo.

"Frelimo has all the machinery to win the elections," she said.

Renamo submitted a proposal to parliament in January in a bid to
"de-politicise" the electoral commission but the proposal was rejected
by Frelimo, she said. Frelimo holds a majority in parliament.

Soares said it was still too early for her party to boycott the poll.
She also said the elections risked being overshadowed by heavy rains
expected to fall in October.

"Our desire is for all Mozambicans of voting age to be able to exercise their right to vote," said Soares.

"But what concerns us is that the date which has been set will not
permit most people living in other parts to vote because of the rain."
