TANZANIA; Dar enters pact with US doctors

Tanzania has entered a five-year contract with African Doctors in neurosurgery from the United States to curb the shortage of doctors in the category. Speaking to journalists yesterday, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Ms Blandina Nyoni, said the contract is aimed at increasing the number of neurosurgeons from the current three doctors to several in future. There is a need of increasing their number, she said. She said
contract aimed at promoting the MOI hospital to be a centre of
excellence in neurosurgery in the Continent of Africa. She added that
the equipment to support the programme will be entered in the country
from July this year. She said that after five years of contract, MOI
hospital will become independent and forget assistance from European
doctors.

Clarifying the problem, Ms Nyoni said 98 per cent of deaths resulted
from head injuries and neurosis happened in the country because of the
shortage of doctors in the field.She said neurosurgery operations
started in the 1970s at Muhimbili Referral hospital under general
doctors from Muhimbili and later Moi Hospital.She added that in 1975
the country received neurosurgery doctors from Cuba and China who were
of short period.

Tanzania in the 1980s got her three neurosurgery doctors who were not
enough. She said other hospitals to benefit from this programme were
Bugando, KCMC, and Mbeya referral hospitals. She added that other
regional hospitals will be facilitated to enable rural people to access
the services quickly. African Doctors is a non governmental
organisation that is based in the US. The NGO developed skills in the
field in African countries.
