World Cup volunteers start training

south_africa_2010_logo.jpgJOHANNESBURG -- Volunteers got down to serious preparations for the FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa in June when they attended their first training session in Tshwane.
More than 1 000 people offering various skills for free this week turned up for their first coordinated

The eight-nation tournament, that is a precursor to the World Cup
finals, runs from June 14-28. Two countries, Egypt and host South
Africa, will represent Africa at the Confederations Cup tourney.
Brazil, Iraq, Italy, New Zealand, Spain, and the United States are the
other participants.

Jordaan emphasized the need for volunteers to put up their best show to ensure a successful tournament.

"You are the lifeblood of the organisation, welcome to the World Cup
family. We have come so far, there is no turning back and together we
will work to deliver the best tournament ever.

"You all play such a critical part in delivering this event. When, as a
fan, you come to an event such as the World Cup or the Confederations
Cup the first point of contact is with the volunteers at the airport.
When the tournament is over the last person they see is also a
volunteer. The volunteers are what shape your attitude and experience
of the country – it is you who will do this, said Jordaan.

Among the volunteers were professionals like civil engineers and financial managers.

South Africa will open the June tournament with a game against Iraq in
Johannesburg. Bafana Bafana will also play against New Zealand and
Spain in the group stages.
