Mr Gideon Moi, Mr Nick Salat and Mr Marsden Madoka said in Mwatate that they were in the process of amending their party constitution to clip excessive powers vested in the chairman and make him share authority with other executive members.
In what might be a sign of his presidential ambition, Mr Madoka said Kanu had the potential of producing presidents and that he could measure up to the task.
I cannot let you down if allowed to lead this country, even you people know that, he said.
As it is currently, the chairman is the only one who can call a national executive committee meeting, mandated to change the constitution.
Mr Moi said that the chairmans excessive powers cost the former ruling party heavily in the 2007 election.
Because the chairman at one time could make decisions without consultation, and being the presidential contender according to the constitution, he led us to form a coalition with PNU, where our potential members (of Parliament) lost their seats to our rivals, he said.
Strongest party
When Kanu had a presidential candidate in 2002, the party, although it lost the election to the Narc coalition, was still the strongest single party in Parliament with 68 MPs unlike in 2007 when it got a paltry 15, said Mr Moi, adding that Kanu would not go into a coalition in future.
We want to make the necessary changes that will enable every member in the NEC to have a say and speak for the party unlike today when only the chairman is mandated to decide, he said.
He said his party would support a parliamentary system of governance in the new constitution.
Mr Madoka said the party wanted to change its constitution so that those with clean records and proper qualifications are cleared to be elected MPs and councillors.
