Media and the way things are put

passop_headerCAPE TOWN - The control of media has been at the centre of Zanu (PF)s power. It seems this has hardly changed. There has been a loosening up for now, but when we look at the challenges faced by The Zimbabwean newspaper you have to wonder is it really free now?

Mugabe has full control of the Herald and it has a very consistent angle- in fact I would go as far as to call it Zanu (PF)s newsletter. It has been an interesting time of change during which measures have been put in place to allow the country to appear free. The reality is that Mugabe has not allowed honest independent media the opportunity to operate with out government interference.

Zanu (PF) aimed to make honest news too expensive to read, but I believe that this newspaper has shown its commitment to the people of Zimbabwe, by not succumbing to the enormous pressure applied to silence them. It has amazed me that this newspaper has never been for profit or gain but has instead fought to keep the people of Zimbabwe informed and to expose the truth.

For many months this newspaper did not profit at all, but it never stopped printing! This is a concept that Zanu (PF) has long forgotten – working for a cause, not for self gain. When we read some of the ridiculous headlines the Herald has carried it is tempting to think that they are working from Chibuku House. They clearly cant see much and have been blinded by prejudice.

I refer to the headline focus: Sanctions Must go Zuma- Herald Zimbabwe Aug 29. We and the rest of the world were reading -South African President Jacob Zuma read the riot act to President Robert Mugabe and Zanu (PF_ for stalling the full implementation of the power-sharing pact endorsed by the Southern African Development Community- Aug 29 The Times (South Africa).

It is really a big lie that Mugabe is trying to sell to Zimbabweans, claiming South Africa stands by him. President Zuma has been put in power by some of the most outspoken groups against the Mugabe regime (such as COSATU) and it is time for Mugabe to recognise that times have changed.
