South Africa: SABC staff weigh up offer

sabcSouth African Broadcasting Corporation(SABC) staff who went on strike in July are to review a revised offer from the national broadcaster on 3 August 2009. The interim SABC board has offered 8.5 percent increase to be paid from August 2009 and 1.5 percent to be paid from December 2009.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) have since agreed to drop their salary increase demand from 12.2 percent to 10 percent, and threatened that should the board reject the 10 percent offer “other forms of industrial action will follow until the SABC respects and implements the 12.2 percent salary agreement”. Broadcast, Electronic , Media & Allied Workers Union (BEMAWU) signed an 8.5 percent salary agreement this week but denied it was “in bed with management”.

In a statement, BEMAWU said the overwhelming majority of their members voted in favor of accepting the SABC’s offer. SABC Spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago also confirmed that the new SABC board brought forward an additional 1.5 percent increase, after reviewing the striker’s demands.
