Destroying the economy

booksEDITOR - It seems that Zimbabwe's public officials are fixated with destroying the Zimbabwean economy by not supporting local industries.

Recently the education ministry made a statement that they wanted to outsource the printing of school text books to foreign companies. Could someone explain to millions of unemployed Zimbabweans why the government is outsourcing when there are companies like Longman and other printing firms such as strand Printers, Kalamazoo, Mazongororo and bold printers that have the capacity to print textbooks. How long are we going to allow public officials to export Zimbabwean jobs and kill the economy?

Another example is the Harare to Bulawayo highway that never even reached Norton. It was contracted to a Chinese company to build when Mozambique contracted a Zimbabwean company to rehabilitate their roads. Guess what? The Zimbabwean company completed the job. What about the Zimbabwean government importing fertilizer from China and starving the local fertilizer companies of foreign currency for raw material to manufacture fertilizer locally? These local fertilizer companies also generated foreign currency for Zimbabwe by exporting their excess fertilizer to countries such as Malawi, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia and Mozambique.

Then there are the public officials who don’t want to support the local car industries. These same public officials then cry about sanctions ruining the economy! If the truth be told, we had everything in Zimbabwe. The Zimbabwean economy was the second most developed economy in Africa and just a few steps from reaching developed status. Right now there is serious unemployment in Zimbabwe. I just wonder what hope the millions of school leavers and graduates have with the way the economy is being mismanaged.
