According to court papers made available to The Zimbabwean on Sunday, Knowledge Sikelela Dube (26) of Alberton, east of Johannesburg, initially appeared at the Westgate Magistrates Court on August 26 and was granted R2 000 bail.

Magistrate Pillay postponed the matter to September 23 to allow further investigations.

Allegations against Dube are that he hit Dlodlo with a brick on the head during a brawl at a Hillbrow pub.

It is believed that the former Zimbabwe international defender was restraining the suspect and a group of men who were fighting. He died on the spot.

Dube is pleading not guilty to the charge.

Dlodlo, who turned out for South African glamour club Kaizer Chiefs and Soweto giants Moroka Swallows, is one of the toughest defenders to emerge from Zimbabwe.

He made his name as a tough-as-teak defender at Highlanders where he played alongside such prominent footballers as the Ndlovu brothers Adam, Madinda and Peter and Alexander Maseko. He was 40 at the time of his death.
