The international literacy day commemorations took place at Tchawale Full Primary School in the area of Traditional Authority Dzoole in the district under the theme Literacy key to sustainable development.

Nkhuwa Kabiya , a teacher who started the work in 1997 in Mbalame village, said he writes on the ground and then calls the students to read what he has written. Due to lack of a black board, I write on the ground and then call the students to come and read what I have written there, said Kabiya.

He expressed concern that the honorarium that he receives is too little and that he is not able to fulfill his needs. I only receive K500 per month which is not enough for me as I only depend on the job because I have nothing else to do for me to get some money, he said.

He also said that he has transport problems as he lives two kilometers away form his work place, a thing he described as a very big challenge to him.

One of the learners of Kabiya, Amele Petulo said what his teacher said was true and that he appealed to government to do something very fast as the problems are affecting them a lot.

Apart from transport, the teacher also does not have teachers guides. He uses the ones he was using when he was at Mbalame. Government needs to something very fast because this is affects our lessons, she said.

Responding to this, Minister of Gender, Women and Child development, Patricia Kaliati said her ministry was aware of the problems and that something very fast will be done. We are very committed to this project and that is why we want to budget for the program so that all the schools have resources, said Kaliati.

She also said that her ministry will make sure that all the classes have desks and so that there is a conducive environment for the learners.

The function was represented by different delegates and among others were World Vision International, Care Malawi and a representative from Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) Nkhoma Synod.
