NGO educates farmers

MUTARE - A Mutare based NGO, CARITAS Zimbabwe, has embarked on various projects to aid food security by educating local farmers. The Department for International Development (DFID) is funding the projects through the British Council.

In an interview with The Zimbabwean last week, CARITAS Zimbabwe Programmes Manager, Nhamo Hondoyemoto, said: “We are receiving tremendous support from the various small scale farmers that we are working with. The numbers of farmers interested in joining the projects is increasing tremendously. Our relationship with various farmers within the communities is giving very positive results.”

Hondoyemoto said the NGO was partnering with Agricultural Rural Extension Services (AREX) in educating the farmers on how to apply conservative farming methods. He noted that various farmers lacked the technical know-how and capital to embark on their various farming activities. “We have lined up programmes to empower the farmers so that they can have all the assistance they require,” he said. Hondoyemoto said there was need for the people to bury their political differences.

“Now that there is an inclusive government in place, we encourage people to try to bury their political past and work together to develop our communities,” he said. Farmers benefiting from the projects paid tribute to the NGO. “We are very delighted that we are benefiting from these projects. We have been asking the government to assist us in order to embark on serious farming, but we havent made any progress. Now that CARITAS Zimbabwe has come on board things are changing for the better,” said local farmer, Thomas Chikomwe.

Isaac Chishiri, another farmer, said: “If all farmers embraced these programmes, food shortages would be a thing of the past.”
