TIC executive director, Mr Emmanuel ole Naiko (pictured) , told the Daily News in Dar es Salaam yesterday that experts have already been dispatched to verify the whereabouts of 11 foreign companies implicated in the report.
The verification is a follow up on findings from a report commissioned by Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, which found out that about 11 foreign companies were operating contrary to the certificate of investment issued by TIC.
Mr Naiko said a team of experts from TIC were verifying whether the 11 foreign companies were operating from the areas initially allocated to them.
We already have our experts in the field, verifying whether the eleven companies have their presence in areas allocated to them, if not they have to explain why their certificates should not be revoked, Mr Naiko said.
The TIC boss said, already letters have been sent out to those foreign companies working contrary to the certificates, to explain why their certificates should not be cancelled.
We already have responses and have dispatched letters to those companies, to explain why their certificates of investment should not be cancelled, he said.
According to the investment law, Mr Naiko said, after two years if the investor is found carrying out activities contrary to what had been agreed, the investors certificate of investment should be cancelled.
The Minister in the Prime Minister Office, Regional Administration and Local Government, Mrs Celina Kombani, through the ministrys spokesperson, Mr Kalister Luanda, confirmed receiving the report.
Mr Luanda said the minister could not comment on the issue at the moment, because she was visiting her constituency but will be in a position to give more details on the position of the government, once she reads the report upon returning to office.
It is true that the minister received the report from Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, on foreign companies operating in the country, but at the moment she cannot comment on the matter, because she is visiting her constituency, he said.
Last month under the directive of the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Mrs Celina Kombani, Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, Mr William Lukuvi, formed a committee to look into the operations of foreign investors in the city.
The report found out that about 11 foreign companies out of 88 sampled in Dar es Salaam, are operating contrary to certificate of investments, issued by the Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC). Mr Lukuvi was quoted saying ‘Prime Ministers Office would take to task owners of companies operating contrary to the laws.’
Mr Lukuvi said some of the foreign companies operating in the country gave wrong information about their businesses to the TIC, adding that he would hand over the report to the Prime Ministers Office for further action.
I was directed by the Minister in the Prime Ministers Office, Mrs Celina Kombani, to investigate the legality of foreign investors, because there were complaints that they were hijacking businesses from local operators, he said.
The chairman of the special committee formed to look into the issue, Mr Mntambo Mhina, said only 26 out of 88 firms were operating according to investment certificates issued by TIC.
