The robbery was said to have prompted neighbouring South Africa to bar visitors using emergency travel documents (ETDs) from entering that country. The four accused officials used the stolen ETDs to forge travel documents. The scam was discovered after a number of Zimbabwean travellers were turned away by South African border officials for presenting fake ETDs.
The accused, an accountant Spiwe Mukombe Mugadza (38), David Chinhanda (39), Rudo Mhlope (29), and Vimbai Gwagwa (30), all passport processing officers, were remanded out of custody to October 6 on US$50 bail each.
