malawi_peter_mutharikaMalawi President Bingu wa Mutharika, who is barred by the Constitution to seek re-election in 2014, has cleared the mist that he is grooming his brother, Prof Peter Mutharika (pictured) to succeed him.

The President has said his brother is free to run for any public position. Mutharika was addressing the media at the New State House in Lilongwe on Wednesday.

I want to make very clear that Prof Mutharika has a right to hold any position or to campaign for any position in this country like anybody else, said President Mutharika.

He pointed out that his brother, who is Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister, is entitled to run for any position like any eligible citizen of Malawi and that he made the statement to clear matter.

I am clearing this once and for all because there is always a mistake that anybody who is related to me is not entitled to business loan, is not entitled to this, said Mutharika.

President Mutharika said it is unfair for Malawians to deny his relatives to compete favourably in various social activities, based on their relationship with him.

He [Prof Mutharika] can stand for any positionin this country. By any position, I mean any position like any other citizens, the President said.

Because he is my brother, he is not entitled. Is it any offence to be a brother of the President? asked Mutharika.
