Malawi: Mwakasungura receives death threats – HRCC

malawi_undule_mwakasunguraMalawi vocal human rights activist, Undule Mwakasungura (pictured), is now facing threats on his life, just after calling for justice to prevail in the probe on the mysterious death of lawmaker Ishmael Chafukira.

Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC) said in a statement issued by its board vice chair Pemphero Manyawa and national coordinator Mabvuto Bamusi that there is a serious concern to the safety of Mwakasungula, head of Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR)

HRCC statement said Mwakasungura has received threats and anonymous calls suggesting to meet him in diverse unknown places since his statement which was issued when Chafukira was reported dead.

This trend has increased since Saturday 26th September when the Weekend Nation carried a front page story where the MCP President Hon JZU Tembo has taken the CHRR Director to court, said HRCC.

While HRCC, as a network of the 90 organisations including CHRR, respects the right of MCP to legal redress, we strongly condemn some people who could be taking advantage of the developments to issue such threats.

HRCC said in their understanding, the CHRR statement merely reminded Malawians of the dark political history of Malawi where deaths would occur without any investigations being carried out.

The CHRR statement gave examples of politicians who disappeared under mysterious circumstances, and that thorough investigations through a commission of enquiry would be the way forward on the death of Hon Chafukira.

The rights umbrella organisation says it will therefore report any continued threats to the police as such threats are a depressant to the democratic tenets on which are laid the foundation stones of our beloved country Malawi.

HRCC also said it will take those issuing threats responsible should anything happen to Mwakasungura.
