SADC calls for meeting to resolve Zimbabwe’s power sharing crisis

morgan_explainingHARARE - Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangira (pictured)i has succeeded in urging the Southern African Development Community's troika on security and defence to hold a meeting in Harare on 29 October with the aim of resolving the impasse between his MDC formation and Zanu PF over the full implementation of the Global Political Agreement.

The Prime Minister had talks Tuesday with Mozambican President Armando Guebuza who is the current chairman of the troika in which he briefed him of his party’s decision last week to suspend cooperation with Zanu PF in government.

The indictment of Roy Bennett, the MDCT Treasurer-General on terrorism charges which revoked his bail, incensed the MDC which promptly addresed journalists on Mugabe’s flagrant disregard of the provisions of the GPA among them the appointment of provincial governors, swearing-in of Roy Bennett and unilateral appointments of the Attorney-General and central bank governor.

The SADC troika includes Swaziland and Angola. South African President Jacob Zuma is also going to to take part in the Harare talks given Pretorias longstanding mediating role.

Tsvangirai met Wednesday with Mr. Zuma in Cape Town, South Africa. Zuma spokesman Vincent Magwenya said the South African president is very concerned at the crisis in Harare and wants to make sure Zimbabwe does not slide back into instability.

Meanwhile Mugabe has not made a public comment on the disengagement of the MDCT from the inclusive government, a move which analysts say is his acceptance of guilt on his part, given his track of laying blame on his opponents.
