Canada’s stance on GNU

canadaHARARE - Canada has pledged its support to the inclusive government and urged political parties in the power sharing arrangement to set aside their differences and resolve the outstanding issues.

Zanu (PF) and the two MDC formations signed the Global Political Agreement (GPA) in September last year, paving the way for the formation of the inclusive government. However, the MDC-T recently “disengaged” from the government, protesting against the hauling before the courts of the party’s Treasurer-General, Roy Bennett, and other outstanding issues in the GPA.

Canadian Ambassador, Barbara Richardson, said her role was to support and encourage the Zimbabwean government to solve its internal problems.

“My role is to encourage the GNU so that it can get on its feet and tackle the country’s problems. We (Canada) are friends with Zimbabwe, we are here to support it (GNU) and make sure it goes a long way,” she said.

Richardson said that for the GNU to succeed, Zanu (PF) had to take the MDC’s demands into consideration.

She said as an ally they had a role to play in securing the GNUs unity and

progress, and that with such support problems could be overcome and buried.

“The Canadian embassy has pledged its support to the GNU, but really it is up to politicians. They have to put their differences aside and work as one,” said the diplomat.

Besides offering support to the GNU, the Canadian government is supporting

a number of projects meant to profit ordinary citizens.

“We have focused on a number of priority issues such as targeting the youth,

commercial development, HIV/Aids and health because these are the areas which need a lot of attention,” she said.
