Tsvangirai to meet Gaddafi

libya_muammar_gaddafiZimbabwes Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirais is in Libya to meet the head of the African Union Muammar Gaddafi (pictured).

Tsvangirai says he wants to brief the AU chairman on progress in the unity government. But officials back home say negotiations to end a stalemate have not started. He left for Morocco and Libya on Thursday.

He says he is going to Libya at the invitation of Gaddafi, who is normally seen as a close ally of President Robert Mugabe.

This trip comes two weeks after SADC met to discuss the conflict over power-sharing in Zimbabwes unity government.

SADC gave Tsvangirai and Mugabe 15 days to start negotiations and it looks like that deadline is not going to be met.

Elton Mangoma, one of Tsvangirais two negotiators, told Eyewitness News negotiations may only start next week.

Zimbabwes leaders have until 6 December to resolve their dispute, which centres on the prosecution of Roy Bennett and Mugabes refusal to dismiss the central bank chief and the attorney general.

That deadline too is getting closer with very little sign of progress.
