Mharakurwa said winning the tournament would cap a fine 2009 season that has seen him winning two out of four competitions that he took part in.

“I am confident of finishing my year with a good outing. School has been challenging me but I have managed to balance up sport and my academic studies,” said Mharakurwa.

Mharakurwa won the Mafikeng Open and the Johannesburg Open in July.

Mharakurwa was a finalist in the 2009 University of Johannesburg Sports Awards held last month. He also finished as a runner-up in the wheelchair category of the Soweto Marathon.

He was during the year nominated as the Zimbabwean ITF Silver Fund Project ambassador for the country.

Mharakurwa is odds on favourite to be win the Sportsman with a disability of the Year accolade at the Sport and Recreation Commission’s Annual Sports Awards ceremony scheduled for next month in Harare.
