Coventry favourite for ANSA award

She has had yet another stellar season in which she won a gold medal at the 2009 Fina World Swimming Championships in Rome, Italy this year. The awards will be presented at the awards ceremony in the capital tomorrow. Zimbabwe Stock Exchange Listed firm Delta Beverages will sponsor the awards this year.

Coventry, who will face stiff competition from tennis ace Cara Black, also set a new world record at the same meet in Rome when she won a gold medal in the 200m backstroke in 2 minutes 04,81 seconds.

The two time Olympic gold medal champion also won a silver medal in the 400m individual medley event on the last day of the championships when she clocked 4:32,12 behind Hungarian Katinka Hosszu, who won gold in 4:30,31. Black, also remains a dark horse in the race for the coveted title as she put her country on the world map once again after winning five doubles titles on the professional circuit this year.

Womens marathon queen, Sharon Tavengwa, who has since pushed veteran long distance runner Samukeliso Moyo into the shade is a strong contender for the award after winning two marathon races in South Africa this year the Nedbank Johannesburg Marathon in March and the Nedbank Cape Town City Marathon in September.
