EC explains interim trade pact

european_commissionHARARE The European Community Delegation to Zimbabwe will this week hold a two-day conference in Harare to discuss how the business sector can benefit from the interim economic partnership agreement (EPA) signed by Harare and the European bloc early this year.

Organisers said the conference, which begins on Thursday, is designed to unpack the interim EPA pact signed by the European Union and four members of the Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA) group in September.

The countries that have so far signed the agreement are Mauritius, Seychelles, Zimbabwe and Madagascar.

The deal offers the ESA countries immediate and full access to EU markets with improved rules of origin.

ESA signatories to the trade pact are expected to gradually open their markets over the next 15 years, with a number of exceptions reflecting their development needs.
