arms_pistolsBULAWAYO - A Zimbabwean national working in South Africa as a security guard was recently charged for trying to smuggle a firearm into the country. Sikhumbuzo Jethro Mazibuko, 40, pleaded guilty when he appeared before Bulawayo magistrate, Tancy Dube.

It was alleged that on the evening of November 27, Mazibuko was arrested by police officers manning a road block near Ascot shopping centre. Mazibuko was driving a white VW polo along the Gwanda road. He was stopped at the road block where his vehicle was searched and a nine millimeter Lorcin pistol was found.

However, Mazibuko produced a valid South African firearms certificate that expires on November 22, 2012. In his defence, Mazibuko, claimed his father had fallen ill and he did not intend to smuggle the pistol. He said he was absent minded and forgot to declare the pistol when he entered into the country.

He was found as a first offender and was discharged on his own plea of guilt.
