ZAPUs provincial chairman for South Africa, Dubizizwe Joli, this week told ***The Zimbabwean that his party was trying to close all loopholes that could later be exploited by its leaders to try and impose things on the people. We do not like what we are seeing in other parties like Zanu (PF), said Joli. We do not want a situation where leaders end up imposing their policies on the other members and supporters of the party. We want to create an atmosphere where grassroots supporters are the ones that will always determine the course that the party should take and remain owners of the party.
Joli said that consultations were already underway in all the partys structures as to what ZAPU supporters wanted to be reflected in the amended constitution, which he said would also be written in line with the dynamics of Zimbabwean politics. Our constitution was written in 1962 and is still suitable for a liberation movement, but we are no longer fighting a revolutionary war, we are competing to govern a liberated country through a democratic process.
We also want to re-constitute the partys brand and make ourselves appeal to the electorate as a party that is standing for the good of the people, not its leaders.
Joli would, however, not say when the re-branding and re-positioning exercise would be completed, although saying that it would be finished before Zimbabwes next elections, widely-expected to be held in 2011.
