The audit is timely, as not only will it fish out ghost farmers, it will also tackle the issue of multiple farm ownership. Made is quoted as saying it was premature to carry out the land audit and judge new farmers production capabilities because the farmers have been operating under harsh conditions characterised by illegal economic sanctions. This analysis is very idiotic because an audit should be carried out for the government to know where we are in terms of planning for the future, regardless of the circumstances.
It is necessary for the government to know who is farming where and what so that it is able to assist where ever necessary. We need to know what the new farmers who have been on the land for the past ten years have been doing. I would like to urge Finance Minister Tendai Biti to urgently make available funds for this land audit and for the investigation to begin in earnest for the benefit of the country.
