NGOs address culture of silence

orphansBUHERA - A Harare based NGO, Hospice Association of Zimbabwe, in partnership with a Birchenough-Bridge based NGO, Batsiranai, this week launched a care-giving programme for orphaned and vulnerable children.

The programme is meant to help children who are mentally challenged, physically and psychologically abused. To kick-start the programme, the two NGOs began with a one-week intensive training programme for caregivers at Mudawose rural clinic. About 30 caregivers drawn from various wards in Buhera district received training.

Speaking at the official launch of the programme, Batsirai director, Francis Tembo bemoaned what he called a culture of silence in the face of rampant abuse of children in the district. Village and community leaders have a duty to protect children from abuse. Unfortunately, there is a culture of silence in this district which has worsened child abuse, Tembo said. He warned villagers against harbouring perpetrators of child abuse saying it was it a serious offence.

Such cases must be not swept under the carpet but reported to the police. Children are the most vulnerable group in our communities therefore its our duty to protect them, said Tembo.

Ward 23 Coordinator for Batsiranai, Robert Mutume took a swipe at villagers who work in cahoots with child abusers. He also condemned some traditional healers for fuelling child abuse through their cleansing practices.

We are grateful that this programme has been launched here. We are now fully empowered to start an active crusade against child abuse and neglect, Mutume said.
