UZ plans sporting bonanza

soccer_playHARARE The University of Zimbabwe (UZ) plans to register most of its sports teams in competitive provincial and national leagues this year.

Sports director, Life Chamere, said: A number of our teams competed in top leagues last year and we want to increase this.

UZ has over the years produced players who have excelled. It has hired professional coaches to bolster performances. Our soccer team was in the Northern region Division 3 and we are optimistic that with the hiring of better coaches and also managing the team professionally will see us promotd to the 2nd division, said Chamere.

The Universitys basketball teams dominated in the Harare league and their volleyball teams also did well regionally.

We are pleased that last year we ended the basketball season in pole position. We also excelled in volleyball and darts but we had some challenges in disciplines like soccer because our teams were not performing very well, said Chamere.

He added that UZ hoped to introduce cricket, chess, netball and karate during 2010.
