Wheelchair tennis gets a boost

itf_logoBULAWAYO The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has pledged to donate equipment to enhance the development of wheelchair tennis in the country.

Bulawayo Wheelchair Tennis Association member, Petros Ndlovu, said the equipment comes under the ITFs Silver Fund project meant to promote wheelchair tennis in developing countries.

Lack of playing equipment has been our major challenge and it is our hope that when we take delivery of the ITFs support there will be great improvement, said Ndlovu.

He paid tribute to the ITF for conduction a coaching clinic for local administrators and players in the last quarter of last year and this had increased the pool of coaches in the region. The coaching clinic was an eye opener and it inspired a lot of disabled athletes to be involved in sport, he said. In a bid to promote the sport, four clubs have been formed in the city namely Jairos Jiri, King George VI, Qhubeka and Bulawayo Athletic Club.

Ndlovu appealed to local companies to come on board and assist in the revival of sport. There are a lot of talented people living with disability within our communities that deserve our support, he said.
