Women empowered to fight back

women_without_facesMUTARE In a bid to reduce the prevalence of sexual harassment against women, Zimbabwe Tang Soo Do president, Stuart Makuvise, will next week launch a course on self-defence. (Pictured: Zimbabwean women can learn to fight back)

Speaking to The Zimbabwean, Makuvise said that concerted efforts were being made to educate women across Zimbabwe about the basics of self-defence against sexual harassment and other forms of violence. Women are an easy target when it comes to assaults and violence and it is sad to note that they are targeted because they are physically weak and cant defend themselves. We teach them to prove to criminals and other perpetrators of violence that not all women are easy prey, he said.

Makuvise said this was a national programme that would involve verbal, physical and psychological skills and strategies on how to prevent, resist and avoid dangerous situations like rape and all forms of sexual abuse against women.Such an exercise is vital for women because it is an empowering programme that gives women the ability to make the right decisions when faced with critical situations. The program is also important because it gives rape prevention skills and this increases self-esteem and danger awareness, he said. Makuvise is currently the president and National Coordinator of Zimbabwe Tang Soo Do Association, a karate union that has its headquarters in Mozambique.
