Sherpard Mandizvidza, ZESA spokesperson, said that the company was importing the bulbs in order to reduce power consumption that the country is forced to import because it cannot produce adequate supplies of its own.
“ZTDC is importing its energy savers from Eveready, a South African company that was engaged through the African Power Pool. Energy Savers are one of the ideal ways of meeting the targets demand side management whose thrust is electricity by customers,” said Mandizvidza.
Energy savers are 80 per cent efficient and last 10 times longer than ordinary filament bulbs as they have 10 000 burning hours. They provide the same brightness with six times less wattage and last five more years when being used by consumers,” said Mandizvidza.
Electricity consumers in Zimbabwe are dogged by constant power cuts caused by low power generation in the country. This is exacerbated by obsolete transformers at both Kariba and Hwange Power stations. The country needs at least 1200 kilowatts of energy but only produces around 800 kilowatts the remainder it has to import using money the government does not have.
