Boxing tourney begins

boxing_glovesHARARE - The Douglas Gadzira Champion of Champions amateur boxing tournament roars into life on Saturday in Triangle.

A total of 120 boxers are expected to fight it out for honours at the boxing tourney this weekend. According to Zimbabwe Amateur Boxing Association technical director, Petros Musiyambumbi, there will be 11 weight categories for men, from 40 kg to 90 kg and above. He said there would also be 13 categories for both women and juniors from 46 kg to 81 kg.

All the country’s 10 provinces are expected to take part in the tournament with the Zimbabwe Defence Forces making it the 11th team.

The boxing tournament will be used to assess boxers who will represent the country in the Zone V1championships. The army will also be using the same tournament to prepare for the African Championships.

“We are expecting stiff competition at this year’s tournament because we will be assessing boxers who will represent the country in the Zone VI championships. The army will also be using the tournament to prepare for the African Championships to be held in Algeria next month. We also want to send three boxers to Singapore for the Youth Olympic games,” said Musiyambumbi.

Bulawayo province hosted the championships last year with Masvingo and Mutare emerging winners after they were tied for the pole position.
