Hero left out

EDITOR - Last month Grace Chirumanzu wrote a story entitled "Zimbabwe's Greatest: A decade in perspective." (14 Jan 2010)

The author lists the greatest Zimbabwean athletes of the past decade. Tonderai Chavhanga does not feature on the list despite the fact that he is the Springbok (SA national rugby team) record holder for most number of tries scored on debut (6) versus Uruguay in 2005.

It is a travesty that such a great Zim sports hero would be left off such a list. Tonderai holds several records at home as well and was the youngest player to ever represent

Harare’s proud Prince Edward School at first team level. He first inspired those of us who follow the sport all those years ago. We continue to follow his professional career in SA and bemoan the fact that the league at home is not professional enough for him to have made a living by playing in Zimbabwe.

He lifted our hopes by being the first Zimbabwean to qualify for the Springboks in recent years and then went on to further thrill rugby fans in Zimbabwe and around the world with his unrivalled debut accomplishment.

Chavhanga has added his name to an immortal list – recognised around the world as a remarkable feat yet he does not feature in Chirumanzu’s list for best Zimbabwean sportsmen and women of the last decade – outrageous! WILLIAM, South Africa
