Speaking at a Real Change rally in Sanyati, Nyimo Township, the partys deputy organising secretary Morgan Komichi, said that the Morgan Tsvangirai-led MDC had a zero tolerance approach to corruption.
All party officials, from branch leaders to the top, will have to sign the code of conduct and ethics. As a party, we seek to be different from Zanu (PF), which ignores corruption, said Komichi, who is a member of the partys standing committee.
Both the executive council and the standing committee have signed the code, and what is left is for the national council to adopt it so that it will be signed by members.
We have divorced ourselves from the councillors in Chitungwiza and we would like it to be known that there is no individual who is greater than the MDC, added Komichi. If there are some here who are engaged in corruption, then they should stop, as we will not hesitate to fire any party official who is found wanting, said Komichi.
A committee against corruption, headed by the partys deputy secretary-general Tapiwa Mashakada, was set up last month to investigate corruption among several senior MDC members, including the minister of energy and power development, EliasMudzuri. Co-home affairs minister Giles Mutsekwa and Muriswi Zvidzai, the deputy minister of mines, were said to be under investigation, but the party rejected media reports that implicated the three.
After firing Chitungwiza councillors, the MDC said that it would instigate an independent inquiry to examine accusations of corruption in the party, whatever the rank of officials involved.
