Mkantjo to take charge

REIGNING Referee of the Year, Thabani Mkantjo, will lead top officials from Zimbabwe who will take charge of a number of Champions League and Confederation Cup matches when the continental inter-club competitions start this weekend.

According to Zifa referees committee chairman, Gladmore Muzambi, Mkantjo has been appointed to handle the Champions League preliminary round tie, second leg match between Zambian outfit Zanaco and Uganda Revenue Authority scheduled for the weekend of February 26-28 in Zambia. Mkantjo will be assisted by Cosmas Chafa and Alfred Zindove, who have been retained on the Fifa panel of assistants. Harare referee Ruzive Ruzive has been appointed a fourth official in the second leg tie of the Champions League preliminary round clash between Zimbabwe champions Gunners and Zanzibars Mafunzo the same weekend.

Gweru -based referee, Norman Matemera, who is new on the Fifa panel of assistants, has also been appointed fourth official for CAPS Uniteds Confederation Cup preliminary round second leg tie against Mbabane Highlanders of Swaziland in Harare. Before Mkantjo leaves for Zambia for the Champions League fixture, he will be the fourth official in the Confederation Cup match between Lengthens and AS Adema of Madagascar, preliminary round first leg in Harare this weekend. The referees will be from Mozombique.

Muzambi expressed confidence that the Zimbabwean referees would do well in their respective assignments. ” They will be great ambassadors of the country. I have confidence in them, Muzambi said. Mkanjto was vote the referee of the year last year, taking over from retired referee Kenny Marange who had won the award in 2008.
