Veteran teacher and advisor to the MDC-T in Bikita, Lovemore Mutingwende, who died a fortnight ago following a long battle with diabetes, was buried in Chikuku in Banga village amid a crowd of mourners from all walks of life who came to pay their last respects to a great father, teacher and unifier of people. The funeral started with a church service where preachers and mourners took turns to heap praises on the man who exhibited great courage and perseverance in the face of challenges and problems.
Reverend Matsika of Masvingo Urban Anglican church conducted the service. Trouble started when the local MDC leadership asked for a time to sing for their fellow cadre as a befitting farewell. Mamutse stood up and reprimanded the MDC activists and threatened that anyone who dared raise a voice in singing would be expelled from the area or pay a fine of two cattle. Fearing the worst, the MDC members remained silent.
Five days later, liberation war veteran and Zanu (PF) ward coordinator (Ward 18), Edward Chikohora collapsed and later died in hospital. At his funeral, Mamutse allowed sloganeering by party activists and there was also singing of Chimurenga songs and denigration of the MDC led by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai.
