Police ignore threats of violence

policeMUDZI - Police in the Kotwa police station are allegedly refusing to open files for cases of intimidation and threats being reported by local people.

Complainants say Zanu (PF) youths and war veterans are again setting up bases ahead of the outreach consultations on the new people-driven constitution.

According to MDC (T) Mashonaland East provincial spokesperson Silas Gweshe worried members of the MDC have gone to the station seeking protection, but were told by police to take their complaints to the Joint Monitoring and Implementation Committee (JOMIC).

Some of our supporters in Mutoko are feeling threatened by the bases that have sprouted in the area. Zanu (PF) supporters are saying that they are going to beat anyone who does not support the Kariba draft constitution, said Gweshe.

The police at Kotwa sub-station are said to be untrained neighbourhood watch members appointed along party lines.

We would expect the police to execute their duties without fear or favour and, even though we have taken the case to JOMIC, we do not expect anything to be done, said Gweshe.

We have been left at the mercy of the same people who destroyed our homes in 2008. The same people have started camping and we are afraid of them more than ever.
