school_childrenBULAWAYO An acute shortage of teachers at schools run by the Zimbabwe National Army has nearly .........

three of the schools dotted at or near army across the country failing to open for the first school term of the year, The Zimbabwean on Tuesday has learnt.

ZNA director of education Brigadier General Itai Mujaji confirmed that teacher shortages at the schools had resulted in many of them remaining closed after the school term began on January 12.

There is a critical shortage of teachers at the Army Trust Schools that is why many of them remain closed, Mujaji said.

Mujaji attributed the teacher shortage at the Army Trust Schools to a recent policy by senior commander banning headmasters from hiring untrained teachers.

The policy directing that the removal of temporary or untrained teachers in army schools is the cause of the crisis, he said, revealing that the ZNA need to fill up 300 vacant teaching posts at the schools that carter for children of members of the armed forces.

Teachers continue to quit the profession in the country and trek to neighbouring countries, especially South Africa and Botswana, in search of better pay and working conditions.
