Waiting for Constitution set to open

The play could not have come at a better time as the country is undergoing a constitutional making process. As a leading arts promotions and management house, Rooftop Promotions saw the importance of producing an artistic and realistic critique of the constitutional making or unmaking process currently underway, said a company representative.

Featuring a rare combination of television and stage names such as radio presenter, Tendai Chakanyuka, NAMA 2003 Best Theatre Actor, Silvanos Mudzvova, long time community theatre director, Sebastian Maramba, young musician-cum-actor, John Pfumojena, actress-cum-musician, Edith Katiji, and vibrant stage and screen actress Winnie Moyo, the play runs for public admission from February 24 until March 20, 2010 and the premiere will be by invitation.

These are some of the questions that the performance addresses: Why is a new constitution necessary? What is wrong with the current one? Why was the 2000 constitution rejected? How achievable is a people-driven constitution? Who are the people? What fundamentals and ideals make a democratic constitution?

How important is freedom of expression and access to inform in a democratic constitution and in guaranteeing that diverse opinions and ideas in checking and balancing our constitution?

The play is written by Stephen Chifunyise affectionately known as Uncle Steve, a leading Zimbabwean theatre writer who has written dozens of scripts which have been performed at national stages like Theatre in the Park, Reps Theatre and a number of international theatre festivals. It is produced by Daves Guzha, a seasoned internationally acclaimed Zimbabwean actor, director and producer who has contributed immensely to the local theatre and film industry with ROOFTOP Promotions, an arts promotions and management house he founded in 1986.
