Local golfers aim high

nhemachenaHARARE - Sports and Recreation Commission Director General, Charles Nhemachena, has a vision of seeing local golfers qualifying for the Rio de Janeiro, Brazil 2016 Olympics after proving a force to reckon among the 144 golfers vying for the prestigious 2010 Africom Zimbabwe Open Championship title.

Golf and Rugby sevens has been drafted on the agenda to be voted onto the sports programme for the Olympics, after the London 2012 games.

I am relishing the possibility that some of the participants at this tournament will also make it to Rio 2016.Zimbabwe is taking this opportunity seriously, he said.

The Zimbabwe Olympic Committee has made a commitment to work with the golf associations in the country to ensure that serious and concerted preparations for the country to qualify for Rio 2016 start in earnest. To this end we shall also encourage the participation in, and the hosting of many more tournaments to give our golfers the much needed competition. I can safely say on behalf of golfs stakeholders in Zimbabwe that the Africom Zimbabwe Open in now here to stay and it will grow bigger and better with each passing year.

Zimbabwe is fielding 33 golfers as neighbours South Africa have the highest number of 97golfers with the rest coming from Brazil, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Scotland, Zambia, Canada, Germany and Malawi.
