RGs office postpones trip to SA

passport_zimbabweJOHANNESBURG The Registrar-generals office has deferred its scheduled visit to South Africa to assist Zimbabweans with the issuing of birth certificates, national registration documents and passports.

The trip had been planned for the beginning of April but sources said officers within the department were now expected after the World Soccer games to be held in South Africa in June and July. The officers failed to secure affordable accommodation because of the games.

The planned tour was as a result of two months of deliberations between the Zimbabwean Consulate in Johannesburg, and the South African branch of the smaller MDC formation, led by Deputy Prime Minister, Arthur Mutambara.

The RGs office is against the idea of using officers that are based here because they want experts already working in those respective offices, said one of the sources. As a result, this will require a big delegation of people, but due to the expected high demand for accommodation it was decided the process should wait until the end of the world cup.

The officers will spend three weeks camped in Limpopo province, where Zimbabwean farm workers are reportedly being exploited and abused by their employers before they move to Johannesburg.
